World-class violinist. Amazing Author. Fashion icon. Famously bipolar. The list goes on, but one thing is certain: You must be talking about Emilie Autumn. With world tours, glossy magazine covers, and guest spots on the albums of such artists as Courtney Love (with whom she performed on Leno and Letterman), Otep, Billy Corgan, and TV’s Metalocalypse under her corset strings, Emilie Autumn’s devilishly dark lyrics, metal-shredding violin solos, pink-glittered pasties, and industrial strength voice reinvent “gothic” for the masses and goths have neverhad so much fun.
More akin to a Broadway musical than a standard rock performance, the Los Angeles – born starlet’s highly theatrical stage show is a sexy circus of glam-rock burlesque, backed by scantily-clad girl back up singers known to EA’s devoted fans as the Bloody Crumpets. Featuring EA’s signature electric violin pyrotechnics, heartbreakingly lush orchestrations, hard-core beats, and menacing lyrics growled with enough intensity to make your hair stand on end, the resulting noise is a harpsichord-heavy romp through Victorian Asylums where screaming is allowed and girls always get revenge.
Known for her eccentric style (she makes all of her elaborate fashion ensembles herself) as well as her prodigious musical talent (she began reading notes before learning the alphabet and was already playing violin at four years old), Emilie spent her youth playing concert halls throughout the U.S. and Europe as a classical violinist before going mad, landing herself in an insane asylum, and emerging as a rock singer with a murderous streak.
The Performance
Her live shows are not merely performances. They are events that encompass 2+ hours, which include musical performances, performance, art, an aerialist, fire performances, a stilt walker and the well-known Tea Time! The shows offer a mixture of amazing musical talent and vaudeville burlesque with a slight twist of circus mayhem all set in the Asylum.
The audience is encouraged to be vocal and is often encouraged to participate in the show. Emilie brilliantly transports everyone back in time to the Victorian Era, through costumes, performances and banter.Emilie’s performance is not only an adventure into the Victorian Era but is also highly personal. She openly displays her most intimate and painful experiences to her fans (commonly known at Plague Rats). She constantly reminds them that as long as we stay together in the “Aslyum”
Side-Line Magazine praises, “Her theatrical performance style and the mix of classical and industrial musical genres have earned her a rightful place in the spotlights.” Emilie’s devilishly dark lyrics, metal-shredding violin solos, and industrial-strength voice reinvent “gothic” for the masses, and Goths have never had so much fun. New York Post recently chose her as on of “music’s hippest chicks,” calling her “completely unique.” Feel free to enter the Asylum but remember once you enter you will never be the same.
